Locals Like ... The Wild Bunch
Early on every second Tuesday night, long-time friends gather to chew the fat and enjoy a little lubrication.
Introductions please?
Garry, Bill, Desmond, David and Johnny. (M.I.A are Wayne, who startlingly has a 4-month grain harvesting contract in the USA, and Barry, lawn bowls champ, was attending a sports club meeting).
How do you all know each other?
Bill & David worked together 54 years ago at Thomas Cook and some of us know each other through business connections. We all used to drink at the Caledonian and then we came here 8–10 years ago at Garry’s recommendation.
Are you all local lads?
Almost all Cantabrians now, although David is originally from Wellington and still supports the Hurricanes, and Johnny came from the Netherlands in 1952 and has been enjoying New Zealand beer ever since.
Do you get together at other times?
Some of us like to dabble at the Canterbury Club while others meet for coffee in Edgeware.
Being long-time regulars, what do you do if someone’s sitting at your table? Don’t you get wild?
This is Garry’s corner but if someone else is already sitting here, we put up no resistance whatsoever and move to another table!!
What is it you like about Pom’s?
It’s the epitome of ‘ye olde inne’. The atmosphere is No. 1, the staff are always charming and friendly and there’s a good selection of quality beers and wines. Our Des is a bit of a wine buff and has never had a glass of wine he hasn’t enjoyed since coming here … and he will not accept one teaspoon less than a good pour!
Setting the standard, gentlemen—always a pleasure to have locals like you.
