Pomeroy's Update March - May 2009
Ahhh, the end of the golden weather… wasn’t summer splendid?
As our holidays become distant memories, tans fade, school starts and the togs slowly move to the bottom of the drawer, we find there’s ever such a small nip in the early morning air. Regret that summer can’t go on for just that little bit longer mingles with rising anticipation of the season’s change; our fair Garden City resplendent in autumn colours and then the first, fresh dusting of snow on the glorious Southern Alps.
Ho-ho-however, the Silly Season was wonderfully hearty here - what with all the parties, work dos and Christmas dinners. Everyone had a ball and the New Year was welcomed in with suitable celebration. Heartfelt thanks to all of you for picking Pomeroy’s as your festive destination!
Victoria and Steve popped out for fishing and hi-jinx in the Marlborough Sounds, did a spot of antique shopping and discovered a choice little vineyard which they hope will be the subject of a wine tasting later in the year. Ava enjoyed a splendidly relaxing time in Auckland with her sisters.
What’s to look forward to next? Super XIV, that’s what! Steve has scored a late licence for the late broadcast games and you can still enjoy our courtesy bus to and from all home games. Also expect an exciting line-up of decadent and eccentric entertainments— quiz nights, loads of bands and a party of a particular nautical bent..! We can highly recommend the pleasure of a Sunday night roast and live music as a brilliant way to wind up the week.
This all puts me in mind of Bruce Mason’s famous play ‘The End Of The Golden Weather’. 1930’s New Zealand. 12 year-old Geoff is looking forward to an idyllic summer holiday at the beach. He befriends Firpo, who dreams of competing at the Olympic Games, but it turns out Firpo is bonkers and young Geoff risks ridicule and disapproval as a result of their friendship. Childhood innocence is at an end – compassion, pathos and metaphors abound.
I can’t help but think that as we leave our ‘golden weather’ behind, it’s OK because we’re old enough to go to the pub. And while, as human beings, we can all be a bit wounded and vulnerable at times, after one or two pleasing pints we can once again recall our dreams and ambitions in the company of friends and the comfort of Pomeroy’s.
Just a little bit more summer, please?
